We recognise the value of diversity and are committed to equality of opportunity within the University. We aim to create the conditions whereby students and staff are treated with dignity and respect and solely on the basis of their merits, abilities and potential. We are committed to a programme of action to ensure that this policy is fully effective.

University services

  • Students' Union LGBT and Friends Society

    The University of Essex LGBT Society is one of the biggest and best in the UK. Winners of the 2008 NUS LGBT Award for Most Inclusive LGBT Union, and winners in 2010 Best Society Award. Essex LGBT have well over one hundred members, associates, contributors and friends from a wide range of religious, racial and social backgrounds.

    Buddy scheme

    The SU LGBT and Friends Society has a buddy scheme specifically for LGBT students. Even if you are already involved in a departmental peer mentor scheme, you can still join the LGBT specialist scheme too.

  • Confidential advice and support

    We offer a confidential service available via your Student Services Hub if you who wish to explore your thoughts and feelings in a safe environment.

  • Discrimination and harassment

    It is illegal for people to discriminate against you on the grounds of your protected characteristics, including sexual orientation.

    Contact the Police if you have witnessed or have been a victim of a hate crime.

    Our Harassment Advisory Network can help if you feel that you're being discriminated against or harassed and would like confidential information and advice.

    Our Equality and Diversity team can provide information and support about University policies that have been put in place to protect you.

Our It Gets Better video

The University wants to raise awareness of some of the issues faced by LGBT* people. Therefore, we produced our own video for the worldwide 'It Gets Better' initiative, which aims to empower and inspire the changes needed to make it better for LGBT* people. Six members of our University tell us their story.

  • Outhouse East, Supporting LGBT - a local help line, drop-in centre and coffee shop all rolled into one.
  • Imaan - supporting lesbian, gay and bisexual Muslims.
  • Gay Christians - supporting lesbian, gay and bisexual Christians.
  • The Gender Trust - supporting those affected by gender identity issues.
  • Survivor Project - addressing the needs of intersex and trans survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
  • Stonewall - campaigning to address the needs of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals in the wider community.

Our Employability and Careers Centre helps you develop the skills for a successful career. Our friendly staff and excellent resources help you to make informed career choices and to enter your chosen field.

Get 1:1 help

Advisers in our Talent Development Centre can offer sessions to develop your writing, referencing, time management, study skills as well as English Language. You can sign up to arrange 1:1 appointments.

Student Services Hub

Our team of advisers are based within your Student Services Hub and can provide information, advice and guidance on a range of topics from accommodation and funding to exam stress and wellbeing. Drop us a line or pay us a visit.

Students' Union

Students' Union club night

Our Students' Union (SU) is one of the most active in the country and is run by students, for students. Our SU will be there to offer you support, plus the opportunity to join numerous clubs and societies and to enjoy lots of events and nights out.
