Our people

Discover the people behind sport, rehabilitation and exercise science at Essex

The School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences is home to academic experts, dedicated professionals, and the future of sport, rehabilitation and exercise through education, research, and scholarship. They come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wealth of experience to the classroom, providing our students with a rich and varied learning experience.

Our academics carry out important research in areas of rehabilitation and the sport and exercise sciences. Many have extensive experience working with industry, government, or non-profit organizations. They bring their practical experience to the classroom, helping our students bridge the gap between theory and practice, and have professional recognition (e.g., HEA, BASES, CPS, BPS).

Our "Green Exercise" project has already shown that the environment you exercise in has an impact on mental health. Dr Mike Rogerson worked with Essex Wildlife Trust on a project focusing on volunteering outdoors. The project showed that outdoor volunteering can improve mental health in just six weeks.

Research by Dr Carly Wood revealed that therapeutic community gardening helped reduce loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Ben Jones is working with Colchester Rugby Club to investigate the impact of concussion incidents on rugby players.

Our research focuses on healthy growth, development and ageing, and mental health and wellbeing. Our team of expert researchers is committed to uncovering new insights and solutions that can benefit individuals from a broad range of communities. Discover more about our exceptional staff and the ground-breaking research they are conducting to improve the lives of people worldwide.
