School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences

Our research

At the cutting edge

Our School has a proven track record of excellence in teaching, research and applied sports science. We are 23rd in the UK for research power in Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism (Unit of Assessment 24, Research Excellence Framework 2021).

Our research reflects a diverse range of interests with staff working across four research clusters conducting world leading research in sport, rehabilitation, exercise and health. Our research is not just about academic excellence. It has impact encompassing individuals, teams, groups, organisations, communities and the wider society. The University of Essex has significantly expanded its state-of-the-art facilities for research and education with the opening of a new facility in January 2018 and further renovation in Summer 2021. We also work in collaboration with the staff of the Human Performance Unit.

Within the SRES research community, academic staff and post-graduate research students, are members of one or more research clusters, in addition to their involvement in cross-faculty, cross-university collaborations.

The research clusters support all members to produce significant, original and rigorous research, promote knowledge exchange between cluster members (sharing of research ideas, skills and funding opportunities), and enhance research collaborations within and beyond SRES and the wider University.
