Our growing investment in performance sport focuses on three key areas, volleyball, basketball and rugby sevens.

Led by head coach, Mark Lloyd, who also works as team manager for Great Britain teams, both the men’s and women’s teams have achieved significant successes, winning national titles and competing in the elite BUCS Premiership. Essex is one of four Basketball England TASS Universities, and we work closely with British Basketball in supporting our international teams. With a core of talented players from the UK, we also recruit players from around the World who bring a wealth of experience and who also act as mentors for the younger players on our squads. We have links with teams throughout the UK and Europe, and our teams have toured and played against teams in countries such as Portugal, Belgium, Lithuania, and Hungary.

Led by head coach Alex Porter, former Great Britain player and International Coach, both the men’s and women’s teams have achieved significant successes winning national titles and competing in the elite BUCS Premiership, with the Men defending champions. Both sides have competed internationally and have enjoyed domestic student cup success. There are also strong links to two National League clubs, Team Essex VC and Tendring VC, offering opportunities to compete in the Volleyball England Super 8s.

Rugby sevens

Led by former England International James Brooks our rugby seven’s programme has considerable links to a number of high level Club’s including Saracens as part of our Rugby Football Union (RFU) official partnership. Although in only the second year of the programme, the Men’s team have competed in the Dubai sevens International tournament whilst the Women’s programme is one of the first of its kind in UK University sport.

All three of our focus sports have developed and produced a number of student athletes that have represented their countries, as well as going onto to secure professional contracts in their respective sports post-graduation.
