Loyalty discounts

If you're applying for a postgraduate course and have previously studied at Essex, you could be eligible for a loyalty discount on the first year of your postgraduate tuition fees.


We offer many funding opportunities to support you in your undergraduate or postgraduate studies, including a range of University of Essex scholarships. You can also search for scholarships on our scholarship finder.

  • Undergraduate

    There are a number of funding opportunities available to undergraduate students. You can search the scholarship finder  to see what's available to you.

  • Masters

    There are a number of funding opportunities available to postgraduate students both from our University and our Department, which you may be eligible for.

    Santander Scholarships

    Eleven scholarships of £5,000 each, funded by Santander Group, are available for taught masters study at Essex for 2017-18. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit if you would not otherwise be able to take up a place at Essex.

    Fuller Masters Scholarship

    We are offering two students the opportunity to study with us in 2018 under the Fuller Masters Scholarship. The scholarship, which covers the tuition fee, is available to UK and EU students and will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.

    Essex loyalty discounts

    We reward our graduates with an Alumni Loyalty Discount when applying for their first postgraduate study period at Essex.

    We’ll reduce your first year tuition fee by 33 per cent if you achieve a First, 25 per cent if you achieve a 2.1 and 10 per cent if you achieve a 2.2.

  • Doctoral research

    Funding for postgraduate study is highly competitive so it is important to fully-research the options available to you as home, EU and International students.

    University of Essex Doctoral Scholarships

    Our University of Essex Doctoral Scholarships support talented PhD students pushing boundaries in their field of study. There are 34 awards in total to be granted across our Social Sciences, Humanities and Science and Health faculties for 2017. If you have an excellent academic background and the potential for future achievement then you could be eligible.

    South East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) studentships

    SeNSS is one of 14 new Doctoral Training Partnerships funded by the ESRC, beginning in 2018-19. SeNSS will be awarding at least 35 fully-funded studentships across the partner institutions in 2018. Essex is now part of SeNSS, which comprises:

    CHASE Doctoral Training Partnership

    The University, along with six partner institutions, is a member of CHASE: Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South-East England, which has been awarded £17m from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to fund PhD studentships over a five year period.

    Applicants for doctoral study in Sociology at Essex can apply to CHASE for AHRC studentships through the department. Funding covers fees, maintenance and professional development opportunities during your PhD.

    The deadline for applications is 7 February 2018 at 23:59.

    Silberrad Scholarship

    The University of Essex Silberrad Scholarships will be awarded by the University to provide support for its own graduates to pursue PhD study. The scholarships are funded by a legacy from the Silberrad Estate, which was bequeathed to the University in 2007.

    China Scholarship Council Award

    The University of Essex is offering ten full tuition fee-waivers for Chinese PhD students starting in October 2018. These are to be held in conjunction with a stipend covering living costs to be provided by the China Scholarship Council (CSC).
