Our research
Research Repository
Our Research Repository contains an extensive range of publications by researchers from our Department. You can read leading
psychology papers and see the wide variety of fields that we are at the forefront of.
We provide a stimulating and vibrant research environment that allows
both our junior and senior faculty members, as well as our students, to
successfully shape the future of our expanding research-intensive
Department.
We were ranked 13th in the UK in the most recent Research Excellence
Framework (REF 2014), with
90% of our research rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
Our research activity is diverse and broad-based with a variety
of interests. Staff work across three research groups,
each with critical mass and research excellence:
- cognitive and developmental psychology
- cognitive and sensory neuroscience
- social and health psychology
Each group has an intellectually vigorous community comprising
researchers at all levels of seniority, state-of-the-art facilities, and a
programme of meetings. Our Department is expanding and has recently
appointed a number of excellent researchers whose skills increase the
diversity and depth of our skills base.
A culture of collaboration
Our environment is designed to encourage and support individuals in
crossing conventional disciplinary boundaries to collaborate in research.
Our Department is a member of the Faculty of Science and
Health, but also has strong links with the world-leading
Faculty of Social Sciences. Our University facilitates and encourages
interdisciplinary research through two centres – the
Essex Biomedical Sciences
Institute (EBSI), and the
Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER).
Investment in facilities
In the last five years we have invested in
facilities of the highest quality.
- Our £2.4m Centre for Brain Science, opened in 2009, gives a substantial
increase in space devoted to research. The facility contains well-equipped
laboratories, office space for more PhD students and post docs, as well as
research meeting rooms and social spaces that foster opportunities for
innovation, dissemination, training and collaboration between and within
groups.
- We also have excellent facilities for electroencephalography (EEG) and
transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), with multi-method equipment.
