Understanding our place in the world

We have created a stimulating and vibrant research environment in the spirit of the founding vision of Essex’s first Vice-Chancellor Sir Albert Sloman.

It was his desire for universities to break down stagnant barriers between traditional subject divisions so that scholars could “…emphasise the fundamental unity of human knowledge”. Our environment is designed to encourage and support individuals in crossing conventional disciplinary boundaries to collaborate in research.

Our Department is a member of the Faculty of Science and Health, but also has strong links with the world-leading Faculty of Social Sciences (for example the Essex Babylab carries out research with the Department of Language and Linguistics). Our University facilitates and encourages interdisciplinary research through centres including the Essex Biomedical Sciences Centre (EBSC), and the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER).

Under the broader goal of ‘Understanding Our Place In The World’, we have organised our diverse research activity across three distinct areas of concentration. These areas allow our staff to pursue their intellectual ambitions and to achieve research excellence, all while fostering an interdisciplinary approach that promotes collaboration and that utilises multiple methodologies.

In addition to this exciting approach to research, our department is expanding and has recently appointed a number of excellent researchers whose skills enhance our guiding mission.

In the latest Research Excellence Framework we were 20th in the UK for research outputs (Grade Point Average, REF 2021).

We 'tie' our research together...

...and tackle a range of challenges

Investment in facilities

In the last five years we have invested in facilities of the highest quality.

  • We have continued to invest in our Centre for Brain Science, with over £300k spent on equipment and software over the past two years to ensure our researchers have access to the tools they need.
  • We also have excellent facilities for electroencephalography (EEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), with multi-method equipment.
