  • A relevant professional qualification and current registration with the relevant UK professional body.
  • A minimum of two years post-registration experience.
  • A relevant first degree or relevant professional experience and qualifications that demonstrate ability to study at level seven.
  • Currently employed in a relevant field of practice.

For non-native speakers of English an IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 450/200.

If you do not meet our IELTS requirements then you may be able to complete a pre-sessional English pathway that enables you to start your course without retaking IELTS.

External Examiners provide an independent overview of our courses, offering their expertise and help towards our continual improvement of course content, teaching, learning, and assessment. External Examiners are normally academics from other higher education institutions, but may be from the industry, business or the profession as appropriate for the course. They comment on how well courses align with national standards, and on how well the teaching, learning and assessment methods allow students to develop and demonstrate the relevant knowledge and skills needed to achieve their awards. External Examiners who are responsible for awards are key members of Boards of Examiners. These boards make decisions about student progression within their course and about whether students can receive their final award.

Exit awards

A module is given one of the following statuses: 'core' – meaning it must be taken and passed; 'compulsory' – meaning it must be taken; or 'optional' – meaning that students can choose the module from a designated list. The rules of assessment may allow for limited condonement of fails in 'compulsory' or 'optional' modules, but 'core' modules cannot be failed. The status of the module may be different in any exit awards which are available for the course. Exam Boards will consider students' eligibility for an exit award if they fail the main award or do not complete their studies.

Programme aims

To provide students with a systematic and critical understanding of the key concepts underlying policy development, strategic planning, and operational management of health care services.

To provide students with skills to access and critically appraise competing theoretical perspectives as a basis to develop their own evidence-based practice.

To furnish students with the opportunity to reflect upon the processes of policy making, planning and delivering of services.

To ensure students acquire a range of transferable employment related skills.

Learning outcomes and learning, teaching and assessment methods

On successful completion of the programme a graduate should demonstrate knowledge and skills as follows:

A: Knowledge and understanding

A1 Advanced understanding of key concepts and principles related to strategic and operational health care management.
A2 Comprehensive knowledge of how to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate health care policy.
A3 Comprehensive knowledge of the relationships between relevant academic theories and practice of management.
A4 Advanced ability to reflect upon one's own professional practice
Learning Methods: A1-4 are delivered by lectures and seminars which introduce the material in a structured manner with opportunity for class discussion.

Teaching sessions adopt an enquiry-based learning approach with students using practical experience.
Assessment Methods: A1- 4 are assessed by coursework.

B: Intellectual and cognitive skills

B1 Interpret, implement and evaluate health related policy.
B2 Translate research evidence into practical activities in strategic and operational service planning and resource management (evidence-based practice).
B3 Write well-structured and well-argued essays.
Learning Methods: B1-3 are delivered in seminars primarily through a problem-based learning approach.

B4 is on-going throughout the course beginning with a pre-registration ‘‘return to study’‘ induction course and enhanced via formative feedback about coursework.
Assessment Methods: B1-3 are assessed through coursework.

C: Practical skills

C1 Assess and manage risk in complex environments.
C2 Perform advanced and systematic search for health related information.
C3 Plan and present work in an appropriate manner.
Learning Methods: C1-3 are explicated through lectures and supported enquiry based learning, and through small group discussion and close supervision.
Assessment Methods: C1-3 are assessed initially in coursework and then through the management project.

D: Key skills

D1 Students will be able to write clearly and effectively; communicate effectively verbally in a group; summarise and communicate complex findings to others, and communicate with professional and lay audiences appropriately.
D2 Students will be able to use the Internet; use word processing packages; use spreadsheets and statistics packages; use presentation packages; and use data analysis software.
D3 Students will be able to read and interpret tables of data and statistics; use statistics to analyse data; use packages for handling and analysing data.
D4 Students will be able to choose the appropriate method of enquiry in order to address a range of practical and theoretical problems.
D5 Students will be able to work in a team with others to agree and work towards goals; work successfully with other disciplines; and practice reflectively and facilitate this in others.
D6 Students will be able to learn from feedback and respond appropriately and effectively to supervision and guidance; work pragmatically to meet deadlines; and critically evaluate own performance.
Learning Methods: D1 is supported in small group class discussions.

D2 is introduced in the pre-registration induction day.

It is covered in on-line teaching demonstrations and supported laboratory work.

D3 is supported in lectures and supported laboratory work.

D4 is promoted through the extensive use of enquiry-based learning methods.

D5 is supported by small group work.

D6 is supported by structured feedback on coursework, the enforcement of tight deadlines and the encouragement of reflection in coursework.
Assessment Methods: D1 is assessed through coursework.

D2 is assessed through word-process essays and internet sources in essays.

There is also a range of practical assignments to assess use of IT.

D3-6 are assessed through coursework including practical assignments.


Note
