Research Cluster

Phenomenology and Existentialism

Back to the things themselves

This research cluster brings together academics from Philosophy.

Phenomenological and existentialism are central concerns for Philosophy at Essex. Each year we offer at least one MA module in phenomenology and many current PhD students are currently exploring phenomenological approaches to subjects such as perception, ethics and psychiatric disorders.

Our members have published extensivley on Nietzche, Heidegger, Levinas, Løgstrup, Kierkegaard, Merleau-Ponty, Husserl, Foucault and Derrida. Themes include post-Heideggerian French philosophy, ethics and the phenomenology of depression, moral psychology and agency and on the relationship between phenomenology and art. Members of our research cluster are also published authors.

Academic staff and graduate students working on phenomenology regularly meet in the Werkstatt, a research group in which work in progress is discussed and developed.
