Life at Essex

We hope that your time in with us will be happy and fulfilling. There will however inevitably be times when you feel in need of particular support or advice, or simply have a query on academic or non-academic matters. We value student support very highly and provide an integrated support network.

Personal tutors

You will be assigned a Personal Tutor while you are studying in our Department on all of our courses that are 10-weeks and over. Personal Tutors can offer advice and support on most academic, social or personal issues and are able to guide you towards other support within the University where necessary.

Peer mentoring

If you are studying on our International Foundation Programme, four-year degrees and our International Year One you will also be supported by our peer mentors, who are previous Essex Pathways Department student volunteers. Peer mentors provide informal, friendly support to you during your time with us. They have recently been through your experience and so may understand better than staff some of the issues and anxieties you may have. You can speak to them instead of, or in addition to, your personal tutor.

Social team

Our Social Team is made up of Frontrunners, on placement with us, to help you integrate into University life and UK society. The Frontrunners are there to make your time with us even more enjoyable. They organise our Halloween and Christmas parties, run Conversation Club, arrange nights out away from campus, such as bowling and roller skating. In the summer they also organise trips to London, Cambridge, Windsor, Oxford and the Harry Potter Studio Tour. They look forward to welcoming you!

Student Services Hub

Your Student Services Hub can offer advice on funding, debt, welfare issues and employment and visa issues for International Students. It also includes the disability team for information and advice on academic support for those with a disability; and provides access to professional counsellors through the Counselling Service.


Nightline is a through-the-night service based in the Keynes Tower. Fully-trained student volunteers offer a confidential service to students who need somebody to talk to during the hours of 10pm to 8am when many other services are closed.

Students’ Union Advice

Our Students’ Union Advice gives advice on such matters as money management, housing contracts and problems, legal issues and immigration.
