Module description

This course is both practical and theoretical and comprises ten seminars and ten practical workshops plus two revision sessions. Initially it introduces students to four major theatre theorists; Aristotle, Brecht, Artaud and Stanislavski. It then relates these theories to a number of plays from the European tradition. Plays studied range from those written in Ancient Greece to those written in the last few years. These same texts will form the basis for the discussion of issues of genre representation, gender, modernism and post-modernism and identity.
