Module description

The aim of this module will give students the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the complexities in critically evaluating study design, analysis and interpretation of research studies. The module will cover the practical usage and critical analysis of different research methodologies in traditional research setting and within an applied environment.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To equip students with the ability to understand the research process so research can be applied in a Sports Therapy context.

  • To explore data, approaches to collecting data and the issues surrounding validity, reliability and trustworthiness of data.

  • To experience and learn from the realities of planning and conducting research and interpreting findings, in an academic setting.

Module learning outcomes


  1. A critical understanding of the research process, including study design, analysis, and interpretation.

  2. A critical understanding of statistical analysis.

  3. Assess and interpret meaningful change.

Module information

Students will learn about evidence-based practice and key issues in research methods in Sports Therapy.


Topics will include:



  • Developing the research problem

  • Levels of measurement and measurement properties

  • Principles of research design

  • Data collection techniques in Sports Therapy

  • Ethical issues in research

  • Analysing quantitative and qualitative data

Learning and teaching methods

The module will be delivered via:

  1. 2-hour lectures and accompanying slides. 
  2. 2-hour seminars.
  3. Weekly self-directed learning activities (e.g., articles, videos, blogs).
