Module description

Further Research Methods in Sport and Exercise Science (SES) examines the fundamental assumptions underlying quantitative and qualitative research, including; research design methods, sampling, and the validity and reliability of measurements in exercise science.


Students will master the techniques needed to critically appraise published research and address original research questions. Topics include the scientific method applied to exercise and sports sciences, literature search techniques, research design, sampling, research ethics, the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data sets, the effective presentation of results and routes of dissemination.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To provide students with the methodological knowledge, insight and critical thinking skills needed to identify relevant research questions in SES.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Critically appraise published empirical studies, reviews and meta-analyses related to sports psychology and sports rehabilitation and exercise science.

  2. Demonstrate understanding of scientific ethics and methods including research design, sampling and measurement.

  3. Analyse and interpret qualitative and quantitative data related to sport, exercise and health.

  4. Analyse and interpret data to test an original hypothesis or answer an original research question.

  5. Select and perform appropriate statistical tests of frequency data, mean difference and association.

  6. Present results effectively and present ideas coherently in written form.
