Module description

Further Research Methods in Sport and Exercise Science (SES) examines the fundamental assumptions underlying quantitative research, including; research design methods, sampling, and the validity and reliability of measurements in exercise science.

Students will master the techniques needed to critically appraise published research and carry out a piece of original research. Topics include the scientific method applied to exercise sciences, literature search techniques, research design, sampling, the organisation of a research project, research ethics, measurement techniques, the analysis of new and extant quantitative data sets, the effective presentation of results and routes of dissemination.

Module aims

This module will provide students with the methodological knowledge, insight and critical thinking skills needed to identify relevant research questions in SES. Students will collect pilot data or access existing data sets in support of a detailed research proposal. The pilot data, an application for ethical approval and research proposal can be used to provide the basis of their final project.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to:
Critically appraise a published research paper, review article and meta-analysis in sports and exercise science.
Demonstrate the ability to plan and conduct systematic, summative or prospective reviews of literature and how to interpret quantitative meta-analysis.
Select and perform appropriate statistical tests of and between-group differences, complex association.
Collect, record, collate, analyse and interpret original laboratory data to test hypotheses and in support of a research proposal.
Analyse and interpret an extant quantitative data set related to physical activity, health and exercise to support a research proposal.
Prepare a research proposal with an appropriate research design, measurement, sample, and consideration of ethical issues sufficient to be approved by an ethical committee.

Syllabus:
Practicals and Supporting seminars:

Seminar 1 – (FH, week 3) Students Supporting lecture on the importance of having a theoretical framework to inform a research hypothesis and discussion of the classical approach to research.

Seminar 2 – (FH, week 4) Supporting lecture on familiarization, learning effects, reliability and validity.

Practical sessions: (FH, weeks 6-10) Students will pilot, become familiarised and run experimental trials as part of a research study over 5 x 3 hours practicals.. A (Seminar 2 FH, 2 hours).

Seminars 3 and 4 – (FH, weeks 16 and 19) Q & A lectures supporting the coursework assignments.
