Module aims

This module aims to develop the knowledge and skill required to competently use the application of ultrasound independently in the musculoskeletal field.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, a student should be able to:

1. Demonstrate an effective examination of the main peripheral joints using ultrasound
2. Critically evaluate the use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool with musculoskeletal pathologies
3. Compare and contrast normal and pathological findings identified through the use of ultrasound
4. Evaluate the role of ultrasound within their professional practice

Module information

Indicative Content:
Basic introduction to technology and scientific principles of ultrasound.
Practical workshops exploring scanning techniques and procedures.
Role of ultrasound in musculoskeletal assessment.
Differentiation of normal and pathological musculoskeletal tissue.
Role of ultrasound in rehabilitation as biofeedback tool.
Professional issues relating to clinical use of application.
Evidence exploring the role of ultasound in musculoskeletal diagnosis and possible influence in management outcomes.

The face-to-face teaching takes place over two weekends.

Learning and teaching methods

Teaching methods include: - Formal lectures - Scanning protocol teaching - Supervised scanning practice - Seminar discussions The module leader who will be able to answer queries via e-mail will support the module. Course content has been designed by the module lead and external experts.
