Module description

This module is part of the continuing programme of skills-focussed modules that provides you with the opportunity to develop some of the skills you need as a Sport and Exercise Scientist, Sports Coach or Sports Practitioner and ensure you can compete successfully in the job market. You will apply some of the basic science and analysis skills that you acquired in lectures and practical classes during the first year to the identification and investigation of clinical problems relevant to performance in a variety of sports. You will also have an opportunity to develop your group working and communications skills whilst indulging in the simple enjoyment of participating in novel sporting experiences!

Module aims

The aim of this course is to provide a spine of activities that enables the development of skills specific to sport and exercise science and coaching, while also encompassing a range of key transferable skills that are useful in graduate employment. The work completed in this module also feeds in and feeds out to other modules.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module,
the student will be able to:

1. Perform a focused needs-based assessment within a sporting context
2. Understand and perform sports-specific assessment to identify a client’s problems
3. Apply basic data analysis techniques to identify solutions to the problems
4. Acquire professional certifications or real world experience with sport specific equipment (dependent upon week one’s option).
5 .Identify key skills learned based on outcomes 1 to 4, and critically reflect upon the experience, and on how it integrates to their existing employability profile.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the job application process and preparation of a curriculum vitae and accompanying documents

Module information

Recommended:
This module will provide you with basic experience working with real clients dealing with real problems. It is recommended that you gain as much relevant work experience in an area of sports and exercise science or coaching environment (e.g., Frontrunner positions, teaching placements, internal sports science and coaching positions, external sports science and coaching positions [including internships], fitness assessment, gym, group or personal training, rehabilitative exercise, sports specific coaching, other sport, exercise or health-related research experience, sabbatical positions in Sports Clubs or other work experience). Any external work you gain can be used in the reflective component of your portfolio.
