Module description

This module will introduce students to the range of physiotherapy core skills and their safe and effective utilisation. It will include exercise, in relation to physiotherapy treatment and health promotion, manual therapy techniques, such as massage and passive movements and the use of electro-physical agents. Additionally the module will aim to introduce students to core assessment strategies including subjective assessment and communication and objective assessment skills such as clinical measurement and assessment. At the end of the module the students will have an initial introduction to practice activity via clinical observational visits.

The aims of the module are:

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the [learner] will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and safe practical application of kinaesiology, ergonomics and exercise science and utilise them within physiotherapy practice as both a therapeutic and preventative approach.
2. Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and safe practical application of a range of manual therapies.
3. Explain and demonstrate the application of a range of assessment and measurement techniques
4. Demonstrate the ability to analyse and describe movement including gait
5. Demonstrate and justify the safe and effective application of a range of electro-physical agents.

Module content

Principles of kinesiology and exercise physiology
* Application of passive and active assisted exercise
* Free exercise delivery and prescription both for individual patients and groups
* Ergonomic principles
* Subjective and objective assessment approaches including goniometry, limb measurement, passive movements.
* Movement and gait analysis
* Massage
* Electrotherapy theory and application.

Learning and teaching methods

The learning, teaching and assessment in this module are closely integrated. Interactive theory classes will be used to introduce core knowledge, with practical classes for learning clinical skills linked with the underlying theory. There will be tutorial sessions for collaborative learning through group work and independent study, both directed and self-directed. Students will have access to resources such as the Learning Environment as well as practical tools and models. Journal and text book resources are provided in the staff offices, the student room and the University of Essex library and Moodle resources

Additional coursework information

On-going formative assessment during practical class activity. Formative OSPE and formative short answer question mock paper. Assessment is through: • 4 station OSPE (50% weighting) In order to pass the OSPE students must obtain a minimum mark of 40% in each station. • Written short answer examination (2hours) (50% weighting). In order to pass the module students must obtain a minimum mark of 40% and pass each element. Demonstration of practice which compromises patient safety will result in an automatic fail of the OSPE. Such practice includes - failure to adhere to requirements for infection control (removal of jewellery, watches etc), patient safety and patient at risk of injury and will result in a zero mark.

Exam format definitions

  • Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
