Module description

The module examines core concepts and theories in the sociology and anthropology of mental illness, as well as contemporary developments in the field. Topics covered include: experiences of mental illness, cultural psychiatry, psychiatric classifications of mental illness, the rise and fall of asylums, psychotherapy, biological causes of mental illness, the medicalisation and pharmaceuticalisation of mental illness and its treatment, as well as the social distribution and social determinants of mental illness.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To introduce students to sociological and anthropological approaches to studying and understanding mental health and illness.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of how sociological and anthropological approaches are different from other ways of understanding mental health and illness.

  2. Developed tools to understand social factors involved in the incidence, causes and treatments for mental illness.
