Module description

This module will give the background necessary to analyse and understand quantitative data, identifying and implementing appropriate statistical tests and interpreting outcomes.


This module provides students with the skills needed for their final research project and knowledge about statistical analyses will be covered to the level required for British Psychological Society graduate membership.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To supply the foundations necessary for students to interpret correlational and experimental data via appropriate statistical tests.

  • To allow students to gain statistical skills.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of how to compute and interpret measures of central tendency, distribution and error.

  2. Demonstrate advanced understanding of calculating and interpreting pairwise comparisons (t-tests), and correlation coefficients.

  3. Demonstrate critical understanding of the assumptions underlying parametric statistical tests and the consequences of violating them.

  4. Demonstrate critical awareness of certain issues and difficulties in interpreting statistical tests.

Module information

Lectures will cover sampling, descriptive statistics, and inferential statistics. Statistical tests covered in detail will comprise the t-test (independent groups, related means) and Pearson correlation coefficient. Students will also be informed of the existence/uses of Multiple Linear Regression and Factorial Analysis of Variance but will not be required to implement/interpret these.

Learning and teaching methods

This module will be delivered via:

  • Lectures.
  • Workshops.
  • At least one drop-in support session.

Lectures will cover theoretical aspects of the syllabus supported by homework exercises. In parallel with these lectures, workshops will reinforce the content with additional examples and also cover computation of statistical tests using computer packages. Workshops will be run relatively informally with additional PG support so that students have opportunities to ask questions. There will also be Moodle Q&A and at least one drop-in support session (more if demand is recognised).

The mini-tests are hosted online (e.g., Moodle quiz), and students receive instant feedback; students can resubmit answers an unlimited number of times before the deadline. 10% weighting (2% each); covering all learning objectives.

  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
