Module description

Let us reiterate it: this module is special! Members of Staff who significantly contributed to cutting-edge research in specific areas of cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology will guide you through their findings and will attack the main questions faced by researchers in the field. Therefore, the topics covered during the module will be reflecting the research activity and expertise of staff in the cognitive and sensory neuroscience group. They will provide you with insights into debates and controversies in their area of research, as well as pinpointing the most recent achievements.

You will elaborate both theoretical and empirical aspects discussed during the lectures and prove your compelling understanding in both written and oral work.

Aims:
Following successful completion of this module you obtain an up-to-date knowledge of the scientific literature in neuroscience and neuropsychology. This module will provide you with advanced understanding of contemporary addressed and yet to be addressed issues as well as an understanding of the active research in these scientific domains. You will develop an ability to critically evaluate contemporary research, both in written and oral work. We aim to engage your intellectual curiosity and draw your interest towards empirical testing and theoretical interpretations as to foster a sense of scientific enquiry in preparation for your research project module (PS934).

Learning and teaching methods

All teaching will be through lectures (10 x 2 hour contact hours in total). The lecturer will typically give a talk explaining the relevant theoretical background and contemporary research findings, and discuss their own recent research in this area. There will be a focus on understanding the current unanswered questions in the field, and how these might be addressed through novel empirical research. Students will be encouraged, and expected, to discuss these issues themselves. The module will entail group discussion and student presentations. Information about the module structure and coursework will be provided in advance through Moodle.
