Module description

This module aims to teach you about some of the central topics in the study of reading development and dyslexia. It is therefore a module that you should seriously consider if you are planning a future career as a primary school teacher or educational psychologist.

The issues that will be covered include the following:
- What skills do children need to be successful readers?
- Do children progress through discrete developmental stages when learning to read and spell?
- Why do some children experience difficulties in learning to read and spell in English? What is the nature of those difficulties?
- How does dyslexia manifest itself in languages with different orthographic systems from English, such as German or Chinese (a non-alphabetic writing system)?
- Are there subtypes of dyslexia with distinct underlying causes?

Links between research and practice will be introduced by reviewing techniques for teaching reading, reading assessment procedures, and the remedial intervention of children with dyslexia.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to provide a theoretical understanding of dyslexia and the developmental process of learning to read. Specifically:
- To examine the contribution of different cognitive processes to the development of skilled word reading.
- To evaluate theories of dyslexia
- To consider theoretical explanations of reading development and reading impairment across different languages and different types of writing system.
