Module description

This is a full year module available only to students in the Department of Psychology, undertaking a placement year. Students will undertake their placement at a host organisation. The student is responsible for securing the placement, with support from the Department, Faculty and the Employability and Careers Centre.


The module enables students to undertake a full placement year with an external Placement Provider. At the end of the placement, the student will complete coursework assessment which will enable them to utilise and develop the links between the knowledge and skills developed in their academic course and the work-based skills developed in carrying out their placement role.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To provide the student with the opportunity to apply their academic learning outcomes in a work-related context.

  • To enable students to develop essential work-based skills throughout the placement.

  • To provide students with the opportunity to analyse their practical work in a theoretical context.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Have a good understanding of their own interests, skills and competencies, relevant to their future career choice.

  2. Have an experience-based understanding of work roles.

  3. Be able to identify, understand, and critically reflect on potential career paths.

  4. Have the ability to communicate with a range of colleagues and clients in a working environment.

  5. Have improved personal professional practice through a reflective approach within a work environment.

Module information

The syllabus will be determined on an individual basis for each student depending on the placement they are undertaking.


The Department and Placement Provider will agree the focus of the placement via the Tripartite Work Placement Agreement, and this will ensure that the student is able to meet the module learning outcomes set out in the previous section of this form

Learning and teaching methods

The learning and teaching methods will be dependent on the placement and will be recorded for an individual student on the training agreement signed by the Placement Provider, the student, and the University.

Each student will be assigned to an Academic Supervisor in the Department of Psychology, and a Placement Supervisor named by the Placement Provider.

Students will liaise with their Academic Supervisor and their Placement Supervisor on a regular basis throughout the period of their placement, and as necessary after the placement has ended in order to allow the student to complete the assessed work for the module.

The Academic Supervisor will be appointed prior to the student undertaking their placement, and will contact the student at defined points throughout the placement. The Academic Supervisor will be available via email and phone as necessary during the period the student is on placement.

Students will additionally be provided with the contact details of administrative staff in the Department who will be contactable throughout the placement; and with the details of the Employability Development Director for the Department of Psychology who will be available to students throughout their placement to provide advice and support in relation to generic work-based learning issues.

Additional coursework information

Summative assessment:

  • A weekly learning log with monthly reflection completed by students throughout their placement.
  • A reflective report on the placement experience, produced by the student at the end of the placement (2000 words).
  • Students will be provided with specific areas to address in the reflective report that correspond to the Learning Outcomes for the module as specified above

 Formative assessment:

  • Mid-point review (using the learning log as a basis for discussion).
  • Employer feedback.

  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
