Module description

This module is part of a suite of careers and employability modules that run in parallel to the psychology degree.

The Year 1 module (PS117) will introduce employability and personal development planning, familiarise students with the resources available to assist their career development, and help them to review their own personal profile and practice the job application process.

Module aims

The aim of these modules is to improve the employability of Psychology students. The modules will provide students with opportunities to reflect and decide upon their career aspirations, help them identify the steps required to reach those goals, and introduce them to opportunities and resources that will help them to complete these steps.

Module learning outcomes

The module comprises of timetabled sessions run collaboratively by staff from the Department of Psychology and the careers team in Student Development, and sessions with guest speakers. The module has the following specific learning outcomes:

1. Introduce employability and career planning
2. Familiarisation with the resources available to assist career development
3. Develop a personal profile and reflect on strengths and weaknesses

Learning outcomes 1 and 2 will be assessed by attendance at five lectures and two workshops. Learning outcome 3 will be assessed by the completion of an online lesson and participation in a workshop focused on this lesson.

Module information

Lectures and workshops start on the hour and last for 50 minutes. Please arrive promptly to avoid disrupting the class. Please ask questions during class if there is anything that is unclear. All preparation (e.g., online lessons) should be done before attending workshops. For workshops, you will be expected to participate in classroom activities designed to support your learning.

Learning and teaching methods

The module consists of five lectures and two workshops each lasting 50 minutes. Lectures are conducted by Career Advisers from the University of Essex Student Development team. Workshops are run by staff from the Department of Psychology. These are facilitated sessions to help students develop self-awareness and an understanding of what job applications require. The sessions may include discussion groups and other methods of student participation tailored to group size. This module will be taught by blended learning. This will combine online material and face to face sessions where appropriate.
