Module description

This module provides support in producing a revised research proposal which will form the basis of the introduction chapter in the thesis.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To help students synthesise the learning from other modules in support of project development.

  • To support students in moving between clinical and research mind-sets.

  • To provide the students with understanding of the issues around conducting psychoanalytically informed research.

  • To enable student to refine research questions and produce a coherent and viable research project

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to have:



  1. In-depth knowledge of chosen subject topic (A4).

  2. Ability to choose relevant methodology (B1).

  3. Understanding of ethical issues involved in research (B2).

  4. Ability to understand applications of research to depth psychotherapy / psychodynamic counselling (B3).

  5. Ability to write effective research proposal (C3).

  6. Ability to write effective applications for ethical approval for project  (C4)

Module information

The module will take the form of seminars and discussion groups spaced out over the year or in concentrated delivery.



  • Choosing a research question.

  • Question clinic.

  • Psychoanalytic methodologies – accessing and using the unconscious.

  • Transference and countertransference in research plus discussion group.

  • Constructing an effective research proposal plus discussion group.

  • Discussion group on proposal development.

  • Proposal clinic.

Learning and teaching methods

Seminars, discussion groups, and 'clinics' will be delivered across the first and second term in blocks with other seminars. These seminars are delivered either in person on an in-person teaching day, or are delivered on Zoom on online teaching days. Reading will be set beforehand. Ongoing individual supervision will provide support to the student's independent study on the topic of their choice. Students are expected to conduct extensive independent study in their chosen area thereby gaining experience of exploring the relevant literature for their project.
