Module description

In this module students will have 70hrs of placement experience, attending their placement for a 7hr day a week over 10 weeks. Building upon their relationships with and experiences in their organisation over the first year they now take up a full 9 – 5 working day experience.

As in year 1, students will have the opportunity to apply their learning to work-based practice at the work placement. Here, as an auxiliary member of the caring agency, abiding by the policy framework within which they operate, students will have the opportunity to experience the role of a professional carer within their chosen sector. The agency will define the students’ duties, and their expectation of their working day. Their placement supervisor will make arrangements for their work, and will review various aspects of their overall work experience.

Students will keep a learning journal throughout the year but especially using this to record significant aspects of their work placement experience. This can be used to help write the assignment for this module and their end of year reflective report (see PA250).

At the end of the 10 weeks the placement supervisor will write a brief report - between 300 and 500 words - summarising each students’ progress and contribution to the organisation. This is for feedback purposes only, but again this may aid students in writing their end of year reflective report.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the module students will have:

1. Gained a deeper knowledge and experience about their chosen care sector
2. Had a further opportunity to apply their learning within a work setting
3. Gained further experience of direct work with clients, the issues and dilemmas raised by this alongside the enriching aspects of therapeutic work. Direct work will be supervised by staff in placement
4. Used their reflective journal to process your experiences
5. Sustained a working relationship with colleagues on placement and their placement supervisor
6. Demonstrated a more sophisticated level of understanding and insight in their application of psychodynamic ideas to work-based practice
