Module description

Students should undertake about 300 hours of work for a two term Capstone Project. Students opting to undertake a full year Capstone Project are likely to have to attend the presentation part of the assessment during weeks 31-32.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • To gain experience of some branch of mathematics, statistics, operational research or the interface of these disciplines with other fields, that the student would not meet in any module.

  • To gain experience of solo work involving research concerning some previously unknown topic.

  • To produce a project document and final presentation (presentation and oral examination).

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:



  1. Have a good idea of the basic methods for obtaining information on a topic, including the efficient use of the library or a corresponding information source.

  2. Understand how to set about the preparation of a project report, including the correct methods for referencing source material.

  3. Have experienced the difficulties of explaining the contents of a project document in final presentation (presentation and oral examination).

Module information

On top of submitting a report, students must give a presentation including an oral examination on it. General guidance on how to give a presentation will be provided, and students are advised to discuss the detailed content of their presentation with their supervisors.
