Module description

The module is a practical course in computing for single honours mathematics students that is open to students from other disciplines. The module introduces the use of specialist mathematical computer packages to solve mathematical problems. In addition, basic concepts of computer programming are introduced and taught.

Syllabus Specialist mathematical software is used for mathematical problem solving. The basic notions of mathematical computing, algorithms and computer programming be introduced.

On completion of the course, students should: Be able to make make use of mathematical software to solve mathematical problems; to understand the the basic concepts of mathematical computing and be able to implement them at a simple level

'A' level Maths or equivalent normally required. Available independently to Socrates/IP students spending all relevant terms at Essex.

Learning and teaching methods

There will be 3 contact hours mostly consisting of laboratory sessions every week throughout the autumn term and 3 hours of revision in the summer term.
