Module description

Students will undertake their placement at a host organisation. Students will be responsible for securing a placement, with support from the Work Based Learning Officers in the Student Development Team.

Module aims

The aims of this module are:



  • to give students the opportunity to put their academic learning outcomes into a work context

  • to add work-related learning outcomes to their portfolio

By the end of the module, students will be expected to:



  1. Have experience-based understanding of work roles.

  2. Have a capacity to connect subject-specific theory to practice in a work environment.

  3. Be able to communicate with a range of colleagues and clients in a working environment.

  4. Have the capacity to work in a team within a work environment.

Learning and teaching methods

The learning and teaching methods will be dependent on the placement and will be recorded for an individual student on the training agreement signed by the placement provider, the student, and the University.

Additional coursework information

The assessment of the placement year is through a single assessment comprising four components: a report prior to going on placement detailing the student’s role in securing the placement and a plan of what they wish to achieve; an assessment of the student’s performance during the placement via a site visit conducted by a member of staff; a final year report on the placement experience, and a presentation by the student on the experience.

The first component will be assessed by the Department. The second component comprises an assessment by the visiting member of staff in the form of a report on the student’s performance. The third component will be a reflective report written by the student, and assessed by the Department. The fourth component will be based on a presentation, assessed by the Department.

Exam format definitions

  • Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
