Module description

What are the main skills expected of a law graduate and what key personal factors will inform your career choices?  This module will help you to prepare for the opportunities and challenges of the graduate labour market.


Complete activities, workshops and sessions that help you to develop your career management and personal development skills, building your core knowledge, key skills and competencies.

Module aims

The aim of this module is:



  • To help students to take ownership of their personal, professional and career development.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the first year, a student should:



  1. Understand the key skills and competencies expected of a law graduate.

  2. Be able to identify key personal factors that inform their values, motivations and career choices.

  3. Be able to identify the key skills and competencies developed through work experience, paid employment and volunteering.

  4. Have started a PDP or career action plan and understand how this may change over time.

Module information

This module will:



  • Explore what is expected of a law graduate

  • Explore a range of influences on career choices (e.g. values, motivations)

  • Increase awareness of career decision-making and career planning

  • Help students to develop an understanding of career management skills

  • Introduce students to reflective practice

  • Increase self-awareness to enhance career management capabilities

  • Increase understanding of key skills and competencies and their impact on career choices

Learning and teaching methods

The module is taught over two years (as LW111 in the first year of your degree and as LW211 in the second year of your degree). The lectures cover the compulsory/key material for this module and will be supported by a series of online tasks that you need to complete.

Exam format definitions

  • Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
  • In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
  • In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary, for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
