What are the main skills expected of a law graduate? And what key personal factors will inform your career choice? Get ready for the opportunities and challenges of the graduate labour market. Undertake activities, workshops and session that help you develop, building your key skills and competencies.
Career Management Skills aims to prepare students for the opportunities and challenges of the graduate labour market. The module runs over a two year period, incorporating a range of activities, workshops and sessions that encourages students to take ownership of their personal and professional development.
By the end of the first year, a student should:
1. Understand the key skills and competencies expected of a law graduate;
2. Be able to identify key personal factors that will inform their career choices;
3. Be able to identify the key skills and competencies developed through work experience, paid employment and volunteering;
4. Have attended a variety of career talks in order to explore and better understand different career paths;
5. Have started a PDP or career action plan and understood how this may change over time;
The module will:
1. Explore what is expected of a law graduate;
2. Explore a range of influences on career choices (e.g. values, motivations);
3. Increase awareness of career decision making and career planning;
4. Help students to develop an understanding of career management skills;
5. Introduce students to reflective practice;
6. Increase self-awareness in order to enhance career management capabilities;
7. Increase understanding of key skills and competencies and their impact on career choices.
Students attend two group sessions in their first year of study (one in the autumn term and one in the spring term) and make use of a range of self-study resources, workshops and events. Attendance and participation is monitored.
