Once you have successfully completed the module, you will be able to:
• demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the nature of the institutions of the English legal system, the sources of law (primary and secondary), and the roles of actors within the system (judiciary, Parliament, government);
• read, analyse and employ legal cases and statutes;
• analyse an essay question;
• plan and execute legal research using a variety of research techniques including library and IT sources;
• communicate research findings in an appropriate written format;
• reference and attribute others’ work;
• build a bibliography
• undertake team work; and
• outline a variety of strategies for independent learning.
Lectures will be weekly and will be in the form of videos and podcasts to listen to, as well as supporting written materials. You will be introduced to the English legal system and to aspects of legal skills you will need for your tutorials. In addition, thelaw librarian Ai Gooch will run some videos and/or podcasts on research skills.There will be ten one-hourtutorials, one per week of teaching (10 weeks in the Autumn term).In parallel, the Skills for success team will run seminarsin weeks 2 and 3, weeks 4 and 5, and weeks 6 and 7. These events run fortnightlyand are mandatory.
In addition, the Skills for success team will also offer two optional hours on a specific topic.Finally, the library will hold a series of workshops: a virtualtour of the libraryand its resourcesin weeks 2 and 3; and workshops in weeks 4 and 5 on Lexis and Westlaw. These events run fortnightly.This unusual structure means that you need to ensure you understand your timetable
