Module description

This 15 credit module is designed to give students an introduction to the legal system at the same time as developing a range of key skills that are important for legal study. It aims to provide a structured learning environment with feedback to support development, to promote team working and also independent learning. ALPS will also introduce students to the structure and role of legal institutions and professionals in the English legal system.
On successful completion of the module students will be able:
- To demonstrate a basic understanding of fundamental features of the English legal system
- To find legal materials online and in the library
- To work together in groups
- To present information orally to a group
- To makes sense of and explain the reasoning in a legal case
- To cite legal and academic sources correctly
- To make a general argument by means of a written essay

Indicative syllabus

Learning and teaching methods

Students will be taught through a series of lectures and seminars. Seminar groups will meet for two hours each week and will encourage active student participation in a broad range of tasks designed to analyse notions of justice and ethics, as well as to instil skills of legal research, writing and discussion. The module will help to prepare students for their legal studies by developing a sense of legal community, by learning the conventions of legal writing, and by exploring legal concepts in an inquisitive way using problem-solving techniques. Students will also be taught the foundations of the English Legal System.
