Essex Law Key Skills provides an introduction to the English legal system and helps you acquire and develop a range of key skills that are important for legal studies. The module introduces you to the key sources of law and tools of practitioners in the English and Welsh legal systems, such as statutes, case law, treaties, and principles of academic writing, including research, writing and referencing skills.
The module allows students to build on their legal and academic skills throughout their first year, with dedicated sessions for ensuring pastoral support.
The aims of this module are:
- To introduce students to the Principles and sources of the English Legal System
- To provide students with an understanding of academic skills, such as referencing, planning an essay and answering a problem question using the IRAC methodology
- To enable students to engage with further development of academic, personal and communication skills
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate introductory knowledge of the institutions of the English legal system, the sources of law (primary and secondary), and the roles of actors within the system (judiciary, Parliament, government).
- Carry out introductory level legal research using a variety of research techniques including library and IT sources.
- Demonstrate awareness of the rules on academic integrity and how to reference and attribute others’ work.
- Reflect on own abilities and goals, and feedback received.
The module will cover the English legal system, sources of law (including legislation and case law), essay and problem question writing skills, getting to grips with Moodle and other resources, a group challenge, as well as a range of pastoral and academic skills.
This module will be delivered via:
- Twelve 1-hour lectures
- Eight 1-hour tutorials
Specialist seminars will also be led by the Law Librarian, and the Skills for Success team.
Students will also have academic coaching sessions scheduled throughout the year with their academic coach:
There is also a range of voluntary ‘How to’ Workshops on a range of academic skills topics.

- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
