Independent Study gives you an opportunity to pursue a particular enthusiasm that might not be covered in your taught modules, or to take an aspect of a taught module that has caught your imagination a step further, pursuing it in depth; and it offers an invaluable training for graduate work. It will also help you develop a high level of organisation and self-discipline which will be invaluable as you move on to further study and/or employment; it asks for a willingness to focus quite narrowly on one subject for more than six months; it tests the ability to sustain an argument over approx. 7,500 words (+/-10%).
All second year literature students undertake an Independent Study Project (ISP) in the third year, under supervision by a member of staff. The Independent Literature Project option is also open to students studying creative writing. All students also have the option of pursuing the related Collaborative Independent Project.
Your supervisor will guide you and help you shape your project. Assessment will be by dissertation, and a presentation on work in progress in the spring term.
The aims of the module are:
• to enable students to design their own programme of study, exploring a topic of particular interest to them
• to empower students to design, execute and deliver an independent research project
• to encourage the development of transferable research skills
• to prepare students for postgraduate study
• to develop students' self-motivation, team building, self-discipline and independence in their studies
On completing this module students will be able to:
1. Plan and execute an independent research project.
2. Articulate ideas and produce a convincing and clearly presented project.
3. Analyse research material and/or practical outcomes.
4. Create a bibliography.
5. Demonstrate knowledge and expertise in their chosen field(s).
6. Independently research a wide variety of materials.
7. Self-motivate and organise their own time.
