This is a full year module available to students undertaking a placement year.
You will undertake your placement at one or more host organisations. You are responsible for securing the placement/s, with support from the University.
The module enables you to undertake a full placement year with one or more external Placement Provider/s. During the placement, you will complete a number of assessments which will enable you to utilise and develop the links between the knowledge and skills developed in your academic course and the work-based skills developed in carrying out your placement role.
The aims of the module are:
• To provide you with the opportunity to apply your academic learning outcomes in a work-related context.
• To enable you to develop essential work-based skills throughout the placement.
• To provide you with the opportunity to analyse your practical work in a theoretical context.
After completing this module you should be able to:
1. Reflect on and articulate the learning gained from a work placement;
2. Devise and revise learning goals and identify future actions to enhance your employability;
3. Record and interrogate critical incidences and moments of insight;
4. Investigate jobs and organisations and identify opportunities that appeal to you;
5. Synthesise the impact that experiential learning in the work place has for your personal, academic and employability development and future career choices.

The syllabus will be determined on an individual basis on the basis of the placement you are undertaking. The Department and Placement Provider/s will agree the focus of the placement via the Tripartite Work Placement Agreement, and this will ensure that you are able to meet the module learning outcomes
The learning and teaching methods will be dependent on the placement and will be recorded for you on the training agreement signed by you, the Placement Provider/s and the University.
You will be assigned to an Academic Supervisor in your Department, and a Placement Supervisor named by the Placement Provider/s.
You will liaise with your Academic Supervisor and your Placement Supervisor/s on a regular basis throughout the period of your placement, and as necessary after the placement has ended in order to allow you to complete the assessed work for the module.
The Academic Supervisor will be appointed prior to undertaking your placement, and will contact you at defined points throughout the placement. The Academic Supervisor will be available via email and phone as necessary during the period you are on placement.
You will additionally be provided with the contact details of administrative staff in the Department who will be contactable throughout the placement; and with the details of your Faculty Placements Manager who will be available to you throughout your placement to provide advice and support in relation to generic work-based learning issues.

Additional coursework information
There are three points where you will receive formative feedback:
1. Before you go on the placement, as part of the process of
a) agreeing learning goals and drawing up a learning agreement
b) you will also share a brief reflection (6-12 bullet points) on gaining your placement and discuss your aspirations with your Academic Supervisor.
2. During the first half of the placement, the Academic Supervisor will choose two of the monthly learning logs to provide formative feedback on.
3. Half way through the placement you will have a mid-point review. At this the Academic Supervisor will address any issues that have arisen.
In addition you will be expected to compile a portfolio of evidence, which is not marked, though you may receive informal formative feedback on some of this. This will be comprised of:
4. The CV and Covering Letter/Application form used to secure your placement.
5. The results of a skills audit.
6. A report by your placement line manager.
7. Monthly learning log entries.
Exam format definitions
- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
