Key module for

BA P500 Multimedia Journalism,
BA P501 Multimedia Journalism (Including Year Abroad),
BA P503 Multimedia Journalism (Including Placement Year)

Module description

During your final year, you will be encouraged to think about a branch of journalism or area of knowledge which you would like to build up as a special subject. This could be a subject area – such as politics, business or sport – or a form of journalism – such as investigative reporting, magazine journalism or interviewing. Your tutors will help you to pursue this interest, across the autumn and spring terms.

Aims

The aim of the module is to develop and expand your knowledge of a particular subject area or branch of journalism, so that you will be better informed and better qualified to seek employment in that area when you graduate, should you so wish.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, you will:

1. Have developed specialist knowledge and experience in the area of your choice
2. Have produced a piece of work which demonstrates your interest and expertise in this area

Syllabus

The syllabus will depend in the area you decide to pursue. You will either:

• choose a subject, such as sport or fashion reporting, and seek work experience related to this subject. You will be mentored by a practicing journalist who is prominent in the field and/or by a member of academic staff.

or

• choose a particular form of journalism rather than a subject area, such as investigative, magazine or feature writing. In this case efforts will be made to provide you with specialist training and practice, either within the university or outside it, or both.

Learning and teaching methods

These will vary, depending upon which of the options outlined above applies to you. If you pursue a subject area, you will be assessed on an essay or article that you produce on a topical subject within that specialism, that demonstrates that you have researched and understood the subject and can write compellingly about it. If you pursue a particular form of writing, you will be assessed on a piece of work that demonstrates your mastery of the skills you have accrued.
