Key module for

BA P500 Multimedia Journalism,
BA P501 Multimedia Journalism (Including Year Abroad),
BA P503 Multimedia Journalism (Including Placement Year)

Module description

During your final year you will undertake a capstone project designed to demonstrate your understanding of the theory and practice of reporting, your ability to work across a number of broadcast platforms, and your ability to identify, research and deliver an original story. During this module you will carry out the essential scoping and preparatory work necessary for you to proceed with the project proper. This might include exploring several story possibilities, commissioning or conducting research, reading round the subject and seeking interviews and assistance from experts and protagonists in the subject area.

The aim of this module is to prepare you fully to start work on your project, planning and mapping it, doing the essential background work and making approaches to those you may need to interview or from whose expertise you may seek to benefit.

At the end of the module you will have:

1 learned how to scope and produce a clear project plan
2 drawn up the detail of your project, with timetable and milestones, and details of the research and other information-gathering you will be conducting
3 tested and adapted your proposal by presenting and discussing ideas, project challenges and goals in open session with peers and tutors

The work required will depend very much on the nature of the project you choose. You will be working on your own, and will need to identify and complete the reading and other preparatory work that you need to do in order to ensure the success of the project.

Learning and teaching methods

Most of the work you will carry out on your own, but you will receive guidance and advice from course tutors, who are available during the preparation and execution of the project. There will be workshops to help you identify and plan a multimedia project, and to present your proposals. The class will meet in small groups to present their research proposals and receive feedback to help refine the final project outline during weeks 5 and 6.
