This module offers the opportunity to work collaboratively to conceive, create, design and publish a newspaper supplement which will be distributed with the Colchester Gazette. It is a great opportunity to put into practice the skills you have learned, to work in different parts of the newspaper production process, and to see your work - and your name - in print.
The aim of the module is to extend your experience of the world of work, and to give you a deeper understanding of the end-to-end business of creating a newspaper, experiencing all parts of the production process.
At the end of the module, you will have:
1. produced and published a newspaper supplement
2. a deeper understanding, backed by practical experience, of how a newspaper is put together and the pressures of working in the industry
3. used and developed the reporting skills you have learnt in the classroom
4. experienced a number of different production roles, such as sub-editing and layout
5. developed your time management and other disciplines necessary for the real work environment
6. developed a deeper awareness of your personal strengths and areas for development to assist your professional awareness
The practical work will involve you in every stage of the newspaper production process, from editorial meetings through to story-finding, gathering information and pictures, researching background, conducting interviews, designing the paper, writing the stories, and seeing the finished product begin its print run.
The teaching for this module is through practical workshop sessions in the summer.
This module does not appear to have any essential texts. To see non - essential items, please refer to the module's

Additional coursework information
Although some of your work will appear in print, this is a team enterprise and you will all have a role to play in delivering the finished product.
You will be assessed on your overall contribution to the project (noting feedback from newspaper staff, your peers and your own self-assessment) and on the quality of the finished product.
You will also be assessed on the work you produced for the project, through your portfolio. Your portfolio may include pieces not included in the final publication.
You will submit a reflective journal, detailing your experience throughout the production of the supplement, a commentary on the role(s) you played, a reflection on how the team worked, and a personal evaluation of the final product and your contribution to it.
