Module description

Building upon the very practical initial teaching methodology input and teaching practice undertaken in the AU term, this module will explore key methodological areas in ELT in more academic and theoretical depth. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in applying the theory to practice as they plan for and teach lessons over the module. The planning element requires a fully annotated lesson plan in which students not only evidence their competence in writing lesson plans but also explain the rationale behind their choices using academic support and references. To support students in gaining this more detailed and academic knowledge, there will be a two-hour workshop providing input and discussions per week.

Module aims

1. To enhance knowledge of the theory and research underpinning current TEFL methodology;
2. To further develop students’ ability to write effective and appropriate lesson plans with a focus on choices made being well-supported by ELT theory and literature;
3. To encourage students to design their own materials that will complement the use of the coursebook.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module students will:

1. Become aware of the theory and research underpinning current TEFL methodology
2. Be familiar with some of the main issues relating to TEFL
3. Become aware of how to plan for and deliver effective EFL lessons
4. Become aware of effective teaching strategies for the teaching of grammar, vocabulary and skills

Learning and teaching methods

The module will run over 10 weeks in the Spring term and will involve 2 contact hours each week. Each 2 hour workshop session will consist of an element of microteaching, discussion and feedback on that and input on an aspect of ELT. Over the course, each student will have 1 opportunity to plan for and teach a lesson to their peers and receive feedback on that. When not teaching, students will observe one another. Written feedback will be provided.
