Module description

The aims of this module are:

* To introduce the fundamentals of contemporary TEFL practice
* To examine the variety, purpose, content and contexts of ELT with a focus on the classroom, the language and the participants in the learning/teaching process
* To show how decisions in the classroom are shaped by background theoretical considerations

The module is designed to prepare you for what you will be expected to build on in later EFL courses. Some of the topics we will discuss are:
* Overview of TEFL current issues
* Appropriate methods and context.
* How to be a good teacher.
* How to be a good learner.
* Describing Learning and Teaching models.
* Aspects of managing teaching and learning, e.g., planning lessons.
* Choosing and using textbooks and materials.
* How are languages learnt? Different points of view.
* Individual differences among L2 learners.
* Language learning styles and strategies; learner training.
* Teaching grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, speaking, pronunciation.
* Language testing
* Overview of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL)

Learning and teaching methods

A weekly two hour lecture/seminar will be followed by a one hour follow-up class which will provide opportunities for further discussion of issues raised, and for group-work/practical activities. Lectures will last for 20 weeks. Students will be expected to attend ALL sessions and to do some basic relevant reading for each session. Check the class lists to find your group.
