Module description

This module is designed to
* Prepare students for the year abroad in Germany
* introduce students to a variety of topics, including the environment, the history of the German language, life in East and West Germany
* familiarize students with a variety of complex grammatical phenomena,
* to develop and improve oral and written presentation skills
* introduce students to reading contemporary German literature (3 novels, see reading list)

There will be 3 contact hours per week over 2 terms, plus revision classes in the summer term:

Class 1: text work, reading and writing skills
Class 2: oral and aural skills
Class 3: grammar

Module aims

Mit dem Abschluß der Mittelstufe soll den Studierenden die überregionale Standard-sprache so geläufig sein, daß sie imstande sind:
-authentische Texte von komplexerem Schwierigkeitsgrad selbständig zu erarbeiten
-sich auch zu anspruchsvolleren Themen schriftlich und mündlich korrekt äußern zu können.

Learning and teaching methods

- In der ersten Wochenstunde werden wir uns auf die Fertigkeiten “Textverständnis” "treffende Wortwahl" und “Schreiben” konzentrieren. Ausgangspunkt ist das Kursbuch Erkundungen, ergänzt durch thematisch verwandtes Zusatzmaterial (elektronische Resourcen sind auf Moodle zugänglich). - In der zweiten Wochenstunde werden wir uns - vorwiegend in Gruppenarbeit - mit ausgewählten Übungen zu Grammatik befassen auf der Grundlage von unserem Kursbuch. Darüber hinaus sollen auch relevante grammatische Strukturen der deutschen Wissenschaftssprache erarbeitet werden. - In der dritten Wochenstunde werden wir uns auf die weitere Festigung der mündlichen Fertigkeiten, vor allem des Hörverständnisses, konzentrieren. Ausgangspunkt sind die entsprechenden Abschnitte des Kursbuchs. Ergänzend werden drei Romane gelesen, die den Ausganspunkt zur Diskussion und Grundlage zu Präsentationen geben.
