Learning and teaching methods

The module will concentrate on the study of French films. Students will be expected to watch 6 films, and encouraged to watch in their own time other films from the library to broaden their background. The choice of films on the set programme will vary from year to year but will represent the second half of the history of French cinema (60's to present day) and cover different genres. The focus will not only be on the acquisition of language skills, but also on transferable skills: * Aural comprehension as students listen to the sound tracks of films. They will be given help with this in the form of notes and intensive work on extracts. * Written and spoken skills: awareness of language registers and style, with a specific focus on colloquial French. * Note taking while watching films and listening to a limited number of set piece lectures. * Group work: collaboration in producing summaries, interviews and critical reviews of films, based on the reading of published criticism. * Presentations of individual films, directors or themes. Language modules typically involve 2-3 contact hours per week. Confirmed details will be announced at the start of the academic year.
