Module description

This module gives you the opportunity to develop your employability skills, awareness of your own skills and career aims, and knowledge of the graduate job market and its requirements. It will also introduce you to the resources that the Employability & Careers Centre and the Department provide for your personal and careers development, work placements and volunteering, and your research of the job market. This three year module is non-credit-bearing, but obligatory for all Modern Language and Linguistics students in the department.
The module will require you to attend a range of different workshops and events and engage in a variety of activities that raises your awareness of your own skills, options and opportunities. It will provide you with the resources and information you need to identify appropriate careers and the steps required to achieve your goals.
Aims
• To raise your awareness of your skills and encourage you to engage in personal development planning and activities that enhance your employability (e.g. work placements, volunteering, study abroad, IT and communication skills training)
• To raise your awareness of career planning resources and training opportunities that are available to you within the University of Essex and outside
• To provide you with knowledge of the job market and its requirements
• To develop employability skills

Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
• Identify careers that are available to you with your degree
• Make informed choices about career paths based on your own skills, motivations and goals, and knowledge of profession and sectors
• Develop an action plan to achieve your career goals
• Make appropriate applications to employers, effectively demonstrating your skills and achievements

Learning and teaching methods

The module will cover 10 core elements as outlined below: * Self-Awareness 1. Understanding the self (interests, skills, values, motivations) and Personal Development Planning. * Opportunity Awareness 2. Understanding degree-based career landscape (careers directly or indirectly related to degree). 3. Understanding graduate labour market (trends at national and international levels). 4. Understanding the opportunities, benefits, and challenges of work experience, volunteering and study abroad. * Decision-making 5. Learning personally relevant career options * Transition 6. Understanding processes of graduate recruitment and selection in different sectors and how to maximise success. 7. Acquiring skills/techniques for researching & finding vacancies. 8. Acquiring skills/techniques for CV and cover letter writing. 9. Acquiring skills/techniques for filling in application forms effectively. 10. Acquiring skills/techniques for interviews and Acquiring skills/techniques for doing well at assessment centres. Assessment The assessment of this module consists of completing a number of quizzes during each year that will be available on Moodle. Each quiz follows on from one of the sessions you have had within the Employability Module and you can always go back to the slides for further help with these. *6 Online quizzes linked to lectures - 3 in the 1st year - 3 in the 2nd year *Attendance at an Employability and Careers Event or Appointment in the second year Each quiz will contain 10 questions and you have to get each question right before you can move onto the next one. There will be feedback given within each question. You will complete three quizzes in year 1 and three quizzes in year two. You will also be required to attend an Employability and Careers Event/Activity/Appointment in your second year, which will be included in your second quiz. In your final year, you will complete an oral presentation and submit a 700 word reflective essay in week 24. There is no mark for the module, you will be awarded a pass or fail. Attendance at lectures is compulsory.
