Module description

This module follows on from Language Expert 1 (LA041) and is a designed to equip students with further skills of analysis, academic writing and independent research. The focus in this module is the relationship between language and culture through the analysis of cultural artefacts such as fictional and non-fictional texts, still images and film. Lectures will introduce overarching concepts which will be examined in more details in language-specific practicals. This module is compulsory for students in BA Modern Languages, BA Language Studies and BA French / German / Italian / Portuguese / Spanish Studies and Modern Languages, BA Modern Languages with Latin American Studies.

Module aims

The aims of this module are
* to provide students with the tools to analyse cultural artefacts;
* to equip students with wider analytical and critical thinking skills;
* for students to present information, ideas and arguments in a variety of formats with due regard to the target audience.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of some of the major concepts related to language, culture and society such as identity formation or cultural production;
2. analyse and differentiate between a variety of cultural artefacts;
3. have further improved their language competence through reading and viewing a range of cultural artefacts;
4. have further improved their intercultural awareness through reading and viewing a range of cultural artefacts;
5. evaluate their own progress in language study.

Learning and teaching methods

There are three weekly contact hours, including a workshop in English and practical in the language the student has chosen as their major language. Class time is dedicated to the introduction of new concepts and focuses on creating practice opportunities. Students will be expected to attend all sessions and to complete some relevant practical tasks for each session.
