Module description

Building upon the very practical initial teaching methodology input and teaching practice undertaken in the AU term, this module will explore key methodological areas in ELT in more academic and theoretical depth. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in applying the theory to practice as they plan for and teach lessons over the module. The planning element requires a fully annotated lesson plan in which students not only evidence their competence in writing lesson plans but also explain the rationale behind their choices using academic support and references. To support students in gaining this more detailed and academic knowledge, there will be a two-hour workshop providing input and discussions per week. Students will be required to read set texts prior to each workshop session.

As well as having the opportunity to teach, students will observe their peers and reflect on this aspect of professional development for teachers. Workshops to support observation, feedback and reflection skills will be provided and, as part of their assessment, students will be required to submit a portfolio of a selection of their own observation notes, feedback to teachers and reflections on lessons observed.

Aims

1. To enhance knowledge of the theory and research underpinning current TEFL methodology;
2. To further develop students' ability to write effective and appropriate lesson plans with a focus on choices made being well-supported by ELT theory and literature;
3. To continue to develop students' classroom observational skills with a view to their being able to provide appropriate feedback on the lessons of others.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module students will be expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate a sound understanding of the interface between theory and practice in ELT;
2. Demonstrate an enhanced ability to plan for and deliver effective EFL lessons with an increased level of independence;
3. Demonstrate effective classroom observation skills and deliver appropriate feedback to a peer;
4. Demonstrate the ability to reflect professionally on the teacher development process and the strengths and weaknesses of lessons taught and observed.

Coursework:

- Lesson plan for 1 lesson. The plan will be annotated to include reference to the theory and literature informing the methods used and approaches taken. Length: 1,500 words, submission in week 27, weighting 40%
- Microteaching delivery. Duration: 30 minutes, weighting: 25%
- Reflective log. Length: 1,000 words in total, submission in weeks 20 and 25; weighting 20%
- Classroom Observation Comments on 1 observed class. Length: 500 words in total, submission in week 25; weighting 15%

Learning and teaching methods

The module will run over 10 weeks in the Spring term and will involve 2 contact hours each week. Each 2 hour workshop session will consist of an element of microteaching, discussion and feedback on that and input on an aspect of ELT. Each student will over the course of the module have 1 opportunity to plan for and teach a lesson to their peers and receive feedback on that. When not teaching, students will observe one another. Written feedback will be provided by tutors observing classes with follow-up meetings as necessary. In addition to the direct contact time, students will be required to write lesson plans, reflective notes and post-feedback reflections as well as undertake set reading prior to classes.
