Module description

This module leads on from IA605-5-AU Introduction to TEFL Methodology. Students will complete a total of 6 hours of observed teaching practice spread across the 23 weeks of study. Building upon the topics covered in IA605-5-AU Introduction to TEFL Methodology students will be required to plan for and teach a range of grammar, vocabulary and skills development lessons. Guidance will be provided with regard to the materials used and support offered through teaching preparation sessions. Support will lessen as the module progresses culminating in an independently planned session, allowing students an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to prepare and plan lessons independently of a tutor. Post-teaching students will complete reflective tasks which will form the basis of 1-1 feedback with the observing lecturer. Post-feedback additional reflections will be written. Outside of class, students will be expected to develop their observation skills through viewing recorded versions of the lessons taught by colleagues and completing set observation tasks concurrently. The recorded versions will be available via Moodle and so can be accessed at the student's convenience and viewed repeatedly if required. All written documentation, i.e. lesson plans, reflections on teaching practice, reflections on feedback, and written feedback from tutors, will be kept within a formal portfolio to serve as a record of the experience of the module.

Aims

1. To develop students' ability to write effective and appropriate lesson plans;
2. To provide students with the opportunity to teach grammar, new vocabulary, and skills development lessons using the methodology and techniques explored in IA605-5-AU Introduction to TEFL Methodology;
3. To develop students' reflective practice by encouraging reflection post-lesson;
4. To develop students' classroom observational skills with a view to them being able to learn from the lessons of their peers;
5. To encourage an attitude of continuous lifelong learning and professional development.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module students will be expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate an ability to plan for effective grammar and vocabulary lessons with a degree of independence;
2. Demonstrate an ability to plan for effective skills development lessons with a degree of independence;
3. Demonstrate an ability to deliver effective grammar and vocabulary lessons;
4. Demonstrate an ability to deliver effective skills development lessons;
5. Identify strengths and weaknesses in their own teaching practice and outline how they intend to improve upon perceived weaknesses;
6. Identify strengths and weaknesses in observed EFL classes and articulate learning points.

Syllabus

Students will teach at least one lesson of each of the following: grammar focus; vocabulary focus; receptive skills development; productive skills development.

Assessment

Coursework will be comprised of continuous assessment of the teaching practice elements of Planning, Delivery, and Reflection.

Lesson planning for each Teaching Practice Lesson (submission: one day prior to each Teaching Practice; weighting: 25%)
Delivery of each Teaching Practice Lesson (duration: 30 or 60 mins; submission: each Teaching Practice week; weighting: 35%)
Reflection on each Teaching Practice Lesson (300 words; submission: one day after the Teaching Practice; weighting: 25%)
Observation notes and tasks (submission: week after the end of the AU/SP terms; weighting: 15%).

Available in the first instance to Year 2 students in the Department of Language and Linguistics.

Learning and teaching methods

The module will run over 23 weeks: one teaching week when students observe lessons and teach, followed by a non-teaching week when students are expected to observe classes. During the AU and SP terms there will be 60 hours of direct contact: 20 hours in the Teaching Practice classroom, 10 hours of face-to-face guided preparation,10 hours of feedback, and 20 hours of observation of experienced teachers / recorded classes on Moodle. The remaining three weeks in the SU term will be dedicated to further consolidation of the taught material. Students will be assigned to a teaching practice group with a maximum of 8 students. Each student will complete 6 hours of Teaching Practice through teaching classes of EFL students of different levels of proficiency. Lessons will last for 30 or 60 mins as outlined in the grid below. If it is a teaching week for an individual student, they will teach and will observe 'live' the reminder of the lesson. If it is a non-teaching week, the student will either attend and observe a live class, or access and observe a recorded class on Moodle. In addition to the one hour teaching preparation session every fortnight, students will receive detailed oral and written feedback on their Teaching Practice. Students will be required to write lesson plans, reflective notes and post-feedback reflections as well as engage in Moodle activities.
