The Professional Portfolio is a compulsory module within the Professional Doctorate in Health & Social Care programme.
An identical module, HS994, is completed during the programme, the aim being to enable the student to demonstrate continuing learning toward and at level 8.
To offer doctoral preparation that integrates professional expertise and academic rigour
On successful completion of this module, the [learner] should be able to:
Demonstrate expert decision making
Engage in critical reflection upon practice
Systematically reflect upon working and leading within complex, multi professional environments
Make significant contribution to local and national health and social care provision through critical appraisal of current practice
Develop networks to facilitate self-development
Demonstrate self-directed, expert application of research techniques in the focused examination of a relevant practice-based topic
The module is taught over a period of a year. Student's engage in facilitated learning and reflection on current problems within their workplace. Reflective models are taught, critically considered and applied to real world problems within practice. Over the course of the year the student build a tool kit which will enable him/her to revisit problems and identify solutions.

Assessment task
The student will present a 6000 word portfolio
Supporting evidence for portfolio content will be available.
The portfolio will be presented using a structure agreed with the module lead.
This portfolio will address all the relevant module outcomes specified below.
The content of the portfolio will be determined by the student and supervisor.
The context of the portfolio will be the students workplace.
The content of the portfolio will provide evidence of the students ability to function at an expert level within the defined workplace
Exam format definitions
- Remote, open book: Your exam will take place remotely via an online learning platform. You may refer to any physical or electronic materials during the exam.
- In-person, open book: Your exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer to any physical materials such as paper study notes or a textbook during the exam. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, open book (restricted): The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may refer only to specific physical materials such as a named textbook during the exam. Permitted materials will be specified by your department. Electronic devices may not be used in the exam.
- In-person, closed book: The exam will take place on campus under invigilation. You may not refer to any physical materials or electronic devices during the exam. There may be times when a paper dictionary,
for example, may be permitted in an otherwise closed book exam. Any exceptions will be specified by your department.
