Module description

"A practice educator is usually a registered professional who supports learners in the workplace. They facilitate practice education alongside clinical and academic colleagues.

In addition, the practice educator is likely to hold responsibility for signing off competency and assessment criteria, based upon the standards produced by the education provider and relevant professional body; although it is recognised that local models of delivery and assessment will apply." (The Health and Care Professions [H&CP] Practice Education Guidance, 2016).

This module is designed to provide a structure for individuals to develop the knowledge and skills to act as a recognised practice educator in their field of professional practice. Where professional or regulatory body requirements exist for recognised practice educator status within a particular field of health or social work practice, this module will provide the framework to be eligible to apply to meet the competencies and requirements. This includes:

1. The Health and Care Professions Council's (HCPC) Standards of Education and Training
2. The Health and Care Professions (H&CP) Practice Education Guidance
3. The Higher Education Academy's UK Professional Standards Framework
4. The College of Social Work Practice Educator Professional Standards for Social Work (PEPS)
5. The Social Work Reform Board Practice Educator Professional Standards for Social Work
6. The British Association of Social Workers (BASW) Advanced Level Professional Capabilities

Module aims

This module aims to:

1. Provide the opportunity to develop practice educator knowledge, skills and values, facilitated by the education provider relevant to the profession;
2. Refresh awareness of the policies of the relevant professional body.
3. Develop understanding of roles and responsibilities as a practice educator and be aware of local, national and UK policies and regulations relevant to learners.
4. Build upon existing understanding and experience to apply their scope of practice as an educator / facilitator thus ensuring that their knowledge, skills and values remain in line with appropriate evidence base.
5. Provide a framework to demonstrate and promote the value of practice and to uphold the values of person-centred professionalism.
6. Maintain engagement in on-going continuing professional development (CPD) related to practice education.

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the learner will be able to:

1. Demonstrate current understanding of the policies and standards of the relevant professional and regulatory bodies in relation to practice education and through application to a specific context, critically evaluate the implementation of these policies and standards.

2. Critically explore, drawing upon evidence and reflective self-evaluation, the roles and responsibilities they have as a practice educator.

3. Utilising reflective analysis, demonstrate advanced and continued understanding and application of the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours required to facilitate the learning of others.

4. Draw upon evidence and personal experience to analyse and evaluate the impact and value of practice education to the care of service users, service delivery and professional development.

Module information

On commencing the course students will be allocated an Academic Supervisor, (usually the module leader). Academic Supervisors will support the student in the preparation of the module assessment.

Students will be expected to meet with their Academic Supervisor on a regular basis throughout the course. Arrangements for supervision will be the responsibility of the student. Any student may elect to change his/her Academic Supervisor following discussion with the module or programme Leader or the Director of Education

Students are expected to maintain contact with their academic and practice Supervisors throughout the module. Tutorial sessions will be negotiated between student and supervisor. It expected that tutorial support and supervision will total no more than 2 full days over the period of the module.

An achievement of skills record has been created to mirror the expectations of the H&CP guidance for practice educators who have completed initial training. This record should be utilised as a framework to negotiate tasks, develop action plans and generate discussions between the HS918 student and their practice supervisor. Students completing this module will be expected to keep this record with them for the duration of the module and at appropriate junctures obtain verification from their supervisor of achievement of the relevant standard. It is anticipated that relevant evidence to support demonstration of achievement of these standards will also be collated and presented to the practice supervisor. An opportunity for the practice supervisor to complete an interim and final report will be provided to track progress and set up action plans as required.

Learning and teaching methods

The scheduled facilitated learning sessions will take place over 5 days and will include lecture, group work and tutorials. Supervised practice is expected to take place in the student's normal place of work. Each student will need to identify a named, relevantly experienced and qualified practice educator to be supervised by. Completion of the Practice Supervision Agreement form will be required before entry onto the module will be permitted. Where a prospective student cannot identify a suitable practice supervisor they should contact the module lead as they may be able to assist in identifying a supervisor for them. As a minimum, the student will need to be responsible for supervising, teaching and assessing an individual over a 70 day placement. Independent, self-directed study will be required to develop the knowledge and skills required and to meet the assignment requirements of this module. On-line learning resources and tools to support self-directed study will be provided via Moodle.
