MSC B93024 Occupational Therapy (Pre-Registration)
This module focuses on the theories which inform occupational therapy, aiming for a deep critical investigation of their relevance for, and application to, contemporary practice.
This module is designed to consolidate your learning from previous modules and practice placements through you investigating the informing theories and science of occupation in depth. You will critically compare established practices with evidence from emerging research, scholarship and practice. You will consider the challenges in communicating the potential of occupational therapy in a complex world, referring to occupational injustice and human rights. This will involve critical appraisal of how occupation can be used to promote health and well-being in different service settings, such as end of life care, forensic services and social care
On successful completion of this module, you will have:
• Developed a critical understanding of human occupation and its impact on the health and well-being of individuals and society
• Critically appraised the historical development of occupational science and its key theories and concepts
• Critically debated the application of occupational science to contemporary occupational therapy practice
Previous modules will have enabled you to develop understanding of occupational therapy philosophy and theory for practice. In addition you will also have acquired practice-based skills and direct experience of practice settings. Now you have the underpinning knowledge and skills required to engage critically with occupational science literature and evidence. This will be a scholarly process designed to give you skills in engaging with diverse sources of information and synthesising them for a wide audience.
The learning and teaching methods employed for this module can be divided into three:
1. Taught seminar-style sessions
2. Enquiry-Based Learning (EBL)
3. Independent self-directed study
The majority of the contact teaching for this module will be delivered via seminar style sessions, rather than conventional lectures. It is hoped that this style of teaching will be particularly helpful in fostering application, discussion and debate. In additional EBL will also be utilised within timetabled sessions within the module structure. Such learning will foster skills in working as a group/team member.
The majority of the module learning will be undertaken via self-directed, independent learning. A module Moodle page will be provided to support this.
Whilst this module does not include placement learning it is hoped that your experiences from your practice placements will be utilised within this module. For example, by providing ideas in relation to the importance and value of an occupational perspective.

Individual assessment tutorials are scheduled within the module timetable, in order to support you in preparing your assessment submission.
The skills enabled through the module structure and teaching include developing the ability to:
- work as an autonomous and pro-active professional once qualified
- locate and appraise resources relevant to the context of your practice
- work as a productive group member
