Module description

The contemporary practice context for the occupational therapy profession is constantly evolving. Legislation, policy, research evidence and ethics shape and change the profession overtime, as well as at times presenting new opportunities in terms of the way the profession works and/or who we work with.

It is therefore essential that you are equipped with the knowledge and skills to work as a pro-active and innovative professional who can respond to the context in which you work. Within this module, you will draw upon the learning gained during 'Working in partnership to lead and enhance practice ' module and practice placements, to further develop your understanding of the legal, political and cultural contexts in which occupational therapy practice occurs.

This module will enable you to draw upon previous learning and placement experiences to extend your understanding of the national and international influences upon occupational therapy practice. You will apply your learning by identifying and developing a critical occupational perspective for an innovative sustainable community project to address the impact of occupational disruption.

Module aims

This module aims to develop your knowledge and skills in relation to leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship by adopting a national and international perspective from which to explore trends and contexts in which occupational therapy practice occurs.

Module learning outcomes

1. Appraise emerging themes and trends in current health and social care provision, in order to identify innovative ways of working and novel settings for contemporary occupational therapy practice
2. Apply a critical approach to evaluating the impact of occupational disruption and the value of creating opportunities for participation
3. Critically examine how the theoretical frameworks and concepts underpinning occupational therapy inform collaborative occupational focused practice that is grounded in the profession’s established intentions
4. Critically analyse legal, political, and ethical issues to determine the impact upon health and social care provision within the context of a constantly evolving global and multicultural environment.

Learning and teaching methods

The interactive nature of this module is supported by small group work, tutorials and seminars which will form the basis of the learning methods within this module. Draw upon previous experiences of EBL, you will explore content supported by small student-led groups and individual study. You will draw upon practice experience to inform the direction of learning within this module. Using a blended learning approach, you will be expected to engage and contribute to online group activities and use of online library facilities. A module Moodle page will support your learning on this module. You will also be expected to explore and utilise the advances in technology within your community project proposal, where appropriate. There will be opportunities for formative assessment tutorials however the emphasis for this module will be on developing your ability to articulate your informed thinking on specific subject areas within EBL and informal tutorial opportunities. Health professionals and services will contribute to the learning within this module in negotiated campus or practice sessions. You will be supported in progressing your skills in areas such as identifying and developing innovative practice ideas supported by theoretical frameworks.
