FDSCB750 Oral Health Science

Module description

This module is part of the required programme for FdSc Oral Health Science.
This module is designed to build upon the knowledge gained from the Biomedical and Psychosocial Sciences (HS736) module and delves into the various ways in which the body's systems can break down and manifest in illness and disease. The student will learn to fully appreciate the patient's medical history and how it will affect both the patient's oral health and the student's approach to treatment. The module will also deepen the student's understanding of periodontal diseases and their treatment.

Module aims

To introduce the concept of the health and illness continuum and implications for health promotion

To differentiate disease and illness and the implications for dental management

To foster the habit of risk assessment as part of routine dental practice

Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
1. Discuss the health and illness continuum and the differences between illness and disease.
2. Demonstrate critical understanding of the physiological and emotional defence systems and factors that compromise them.
3. Apply relevant psychological principles to enable patients to take responsibility for their own health.
4. Discuss the short and long term effects of the physiological and emotional responses to stress, and apply appropriate measures to reduce stress and anxiety.
5. List the pharmacological properties of the drugs used in general dental practice, including their unwanted effects.
6. Outline the manifestations of common human diseases and disorders relevant to the practice of dental hygiene, including their investigation and management.
7. Demonstrate understanding of the main medical disorders that may impinge on dental treatment.
8. List the pathological features and dental relevance of common disorders of major organ systems.
9. List the role of therapeutics in the management of patients requiring dental treatment.
10. Check and evaluate a patient’s medical and social history.
11. Acknowledge the limitations of mechanical non-surgical treatment and the role of antimicrobials.
12. Demonstrate competence in the placement of antimicrobial therapy.
13. Maintain accurate and complete dental records, including dental radiographs, and verbal communication with the dental team to enable effective care of the dental patients.
14. Recognise the limitation of his/her own skills and practice within the scope of DCPs

Module information

The module consists of taught sessions by clinical experts in the field of oral health science and dental hygiene covering theoretical teaching in human illness and disease and therapeutics. It also includes some demonstration and teaching of clinical skills using simulation and learning from clinical work based placement undertaking clinical competencies on patients under supervision.
